To begin this project, I will need to open links in an Excel document that were provided to me by my Practicum Supervisor. The Excel document has around 1,157 links to pro-integration letters, so there are WAY more letters then I would be able to complete for this Practicum. The links lead to pdfs of the letters on Ole Miss' Dear Mr. Meredith project website. I first examine the digital pdf on the website to see if the letter has a return address or any indication of where the letter may come from.
The purpose of this phase of Ole Miss' digitization project of Mr. Meredith's letters is to create a digital map of where all of the letters originated from. Therefore the first letters to be transcribed are those that have some indication of where the letters originated from.
After I determine that the letter does have a return address or other indication of where it originated, I download the pdf of the letter to be transcribed. I spend a few days just reviewing and downloading the letters because its just easier to stay in that rhythm.
I intend to download around 25-50 letters at a time and then work on transcribing them. Reviewing and downloading the letters can take several days to do depending on how many hours I work on it.
